Community and Continuity: 6th East Kilbride Scouts Celebrate Founder’s Day

The spirit of Scouting was on full display this past weekend as the 6th East Kilbride Scout Group gathered to commemorate Founder’s Day. In a meaningful display of community ties, the group held a joint service with the East Kilbride United Reformed Church, bringing together generations of Scouts, leaders, and parishioners.

Founder’s Day marks the birthday of Robert Baden-Powell, the movement’s founder, and serves as an annual moment for members to reflect on the values of Scouting: adventure, citizenship, and personal growth.

A Service of Reflection and Leadership

The atmosphere in the church hall was one of pride and tradition. The service began with a ceremonial flourish as the group flags were paraded into the hall, symbolising the presence and history of the 6th East Kilbride sections.

The youth members took center stage during the liturgy, demonstrating the confidence and public speaking skills fostered through the Scouting program:

  • Luke, representing the Explorer Scouts, delivered a scripture reading with poise.
  • Cian, representing the Scouts, followed with a reading, grounding the service in the group’s spiritual foundations.

Renewing the Promise

A poignant highlight of the event was the renewal of the Scout Promise. Led by Group Lead Volunteer John Anderson, members from every section—from the youngest Beavers to the seasoned Explorers—stood to reaffirm their commitment to the Scout values.

“Hearing the hall filled with voices renewing their promise is always a powerful reminder of why we do this,” said John Anderson. “It connects our current members to the global Scouting family and the legacy started over a century ago.”

Looking Forward

The joint service served as a reminder that Scouting remains a vital part of the East Kilbride fabric. By partnering with the United Reformed Church, the 6th East Kilbride Scout Group continues to provide a space where young people can develop their character while staying connected to their local community.

As the flags were paraded out at the conclusion of the service, the message was clear: the future of Scouting in East Kilbride is in very capable hands
