The middle of February usually calls for hot chocolate and indoor comforts, but for the 6th East Kilbride Scouts and Explorers, it was the perfect time to head into the wild. From February 13th to 15th, the group joined hundreds of other young adventurers at the Auchengillan Outdoor Centre for the legendary Subzero 2026 winter camp.
Marking a highlight in Auchengillan’s centenary year, this wasn’t just any camping trip—it was a true test of resilience, spirit, and sleeping bag ratings.
A Weekend of High-Octane Adventure
The Subzero event is famous for its “extreme” activity roster, and 2026 did not disappoint. The 6th EK contingent dove headfirst into a whirlwind of activities designed to keep the blood pumping despite the chill. Highlights of the weekend included:
- The Winter Market & Cafe: A chance to defrost with hot drinks and treats between sessions.
- High-Speed Thrills: Scouts and Explorers took to the Segways and pedal karts, navigating the frosty terrain of the 120-acre estate.
- Target Sports: Precision was tested at the archery and axe-throwing ranges, where frozen fingers didn’t stop the 6th EK from hitting the mark.
- The Famous Outdoor Pool Party: Perhaps the most “Subzero” activity of all—braving the air temperatures for a dip in the heated outdoor pool, complete with a DJ and laser lights.
The Sunday Surprise: A Winter Wonderland
While Friday and Saturday provided plenty of crisp, cold air, Sunday morning delivered the ultimate winter camp experience. Participants unzipped their tents to find a blanket of fresh snow covering the Auchengillan landscape.
The temperatures truly lived up to the event’s name, dipping well below freezing. For the 6th East Kilbride crew, this meant a morning of shaking snow off canvas, seeing their breath in the air, and racing to the mess tent for a well-earned hot breakfast. Rather than dampening spirits, the snow added an extra layer of magic (and a few spontaneous snowfights) to the final day of the camp.
“There’s something special about Scouting in the snow. It turns a regular weekend into a real adventure that these young people will talk about for years,” noted one of the 6th EK leaders.
Building Skills and Friendships
Beyond the adrenaline, Subzero 2026 was about the “Skills for Life” that Scouting is known for. The Scouts (aged 10–14) and Explorers (aged 14–18) worked together to manage their gear in harsh conditions, proving that with the right kit and a bit of “6th EK” grit, you can be comfortable even in the Scottish winter.
As the activities closed down on Sunday afternoon, the 6th East Kilbride Scouts and Explorers left Auchengillan tired, cold, and slightly damp—but with stories of a snowy Sunday they won’t soon forget.
